'On Something'

Sex Pistols bassist returns to his old record label

One of the reasons glen Matlock was booted from the sex pistols was the fact that the other members (erroneously they now admit) believed he wanted to turn the band into the Beatles or the Bay City Rollers. What this means, nearly three decades on, is that Matlock's ear for melody is still ongoing.

'On Something' is ragged but pleasing stuff, a bash 'em out band playing behind a singer whose voice has more cracks than a broken piss pot. And whilst this album may not ever be spectacular, it is consistent, and comes wrapped with a sense of charm that lasts throughout.

IAN WINWOOD.
