GLEN MATLOCK AND THE PHILISTINES
- On Something -
You can't help
feeling slightly in awe when asked to review a CD from the guy who was responsible
for changing the musical landscape a quarter of a century ago. .... but here
goes ....! This CD carries on logically from Glen's first solo album in 1996
and 2000's 'Open Mind', which means more of the same classically tuneful rock
songs. Since the days of the Sex Pistols, Glen has always used his Kinds, Stones
and Small Faces influences for guidance, and this album is no exception. keyboards
and a sixties vibe permeate every catchy track, as does a certain sense of humour.
Okay, the songs are far less blunt than Pretty Vacant, but the message is the
same, tempered with experience and knowledge. The vocals are strong and typically
Glen and that is partly what gives these songs such upbeat personality and bring
them to life, and there's not a song on here that won't have you tapping your
feet.
It'll suffer (media attention-wise) from not being Nu-something or other, but
frankly, who cares. Glen Matlock has nothing to prove, which is why it's exceptionally
good to see that he's still 'got it'
